Here we sit down with Angela, to know a bit more about her journey as an entrepreneur.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Angela: I’ve always been a bit entrepreneurial in my choice of work early on. When I was 22 I became a Licensed Massage Therapist and a few years later I became a Licensed Cosmetologist. Those careers gave me a taste of being my own boss.
It was becoming a mother that changed everything. There was no way I could go back to work after 6 weeks! I could not imagine having to ask permission from someone to take time off for my family. I knew I could truly make it on my own as a businesswoman, and I knew I wasn’t done helping people. I just had to find a way to do that and be home with my son.
When I thought of the common denominator between massage therapy and hair, it was the conversation I had with the person. How in those conversations I’d be privy to the most personal moments. Many times my clients came back week after week just for our talks because it was so helpful for them in their lives.
Soon after that I found out about the online coaching world and knew that this was what I was looking for.
Q. How did you get started?
Angela: I knew I wanted to help other moms, other women like myself who had endured a lot of terrible things such as childhood sexual abuse & incest, neglect, eating disorders, and emotional abuse in our childhood that carried into our adulthood as addictions, domestic abuse, and rape. I wanted to help other women break those negative cycles and ‘generational curses’ so we can raise healthy children free from the effects of abuse & narcissism. I wanted to help other women be cycle breakers and re-parent themselves and heal their inner child to free their bodies & minds of disease, but I had no idea where to start.
In 2017 I discovered the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and through their program became certified as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach a year later. During this intensive year-long study and becoming my first client I was able to heal my thyroid through dietary changes and had more energy than I’ve ever had before.
In 2016 I started reading all the books by Dr. Seigel about how to speak to your baby using positive language to raise a happy and independent child. I used the techniques on everyone and it helped every time. I went down the rabbit hole to find out more about these language patterns and was led to NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, also known as the ‘language of the mind’. I found Transform Destiny and signed up in December of 2019 and became a Certified Practioner of NLP & EFT. In April of 2021 became Master Certified in NLP, T.I.M.E. Techniques, Clinical Hypnosis, and Life & Success Coaching.
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Angela: I’d say my biggest challenge starting was telling everyone my goals and dreams! I learned quickly that a lot of people just don’t understand what it’s like to really want to start something new and be your own person. That new and big ideas make a lot of people uncomfortable & will give unsolicited, well-meaning advice to “Just get a regular job, like everyone else. Aren’t you too old for something new? You need to put the dream away until your baby is grown and out of the house…”
Through NLP I learned the concept that everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have and are always reacting through the lens of their past experiences, beliefs, values, etc. Therefore, what people say and do is a reflection of where they are in life, and has very little to do about you. When I was able to understand this I was able to separate people’s unsolicited opinions about my life and career choices from my mind and actions.
Just as knowing who not to talk to is, knowing who your biggest support is super important, too. Throughout this whole time every time I’ve felt like quitting I go to my biggest supporter, my husband, Michael. He knows how to talk to me to remember the bigger picture. Every time I have a big win, he’s the first I call, too!
Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?
Angela: My favorite client success comes from a past client Lisa who had recently lost her mother and could not get through a few minutes without sobbing. Within a month we found the root cause of the guilt and anger that was holding her back through T.I.M.E. Techniques and released it along with other negative emotions and limiting beliefs that had been keeping her stuck in the grief process. She learned to ride the waves of emotions again, instead of staying in the depths of them. Within 6 weeks she had her first paying clients in her coaching business and started the conversation of marriage with her long-term boyfriend!
She was committed to her healing process and was an active participant. She showed up with a beginner mind each session.
An absolute beautiful transformation that I will always remember.
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Angela: The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is my absolute favorite book that I think everyone should read. It’s a book I re-read often. I don’t usually read fiction, but this book is different. There is something about the journey the shepherd boy goes on as he finds treasures unexpected and learns to listen and follow his intuition that fits every time I read it. There is a new lesson each time I read it. It’s as if the book is alive and changes to fit whatever lesson I need to understand. It is a truly life-changing book that I often give as gifts.
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Angela: In terms of legacy, the markI hope to leave on the world is one of hope and belief. Hope & believe that no matter what cards you were dealt, or where you are in your life, YOU have the power to create a life you love and it all starts with your mind. When you understand how powerful your mind is, you are truly unstoppable!
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Angela: Follow your heart and inspiration because this idea is the gift that has been given to you by God, Source, Universe, and greatness lives inside you if you dare to follow it!
