Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

Dr. Amanda: I became inspired as an entrepreneur as a kid when I began putting a laundry basket on my head pretending I was a bank teller. The gift of entrepreneurship was always there! I was always afraid of stepping out as an entrepreneur, I even avoided it through college and I missed many opportunities. However, in 2017 after writing my first children’s book I am Worthy, Valued, and Loved, I realized that I had been hiding my gifts and talents. I got my EIN number in November 2019 and in 2020 I launched Healthy Roots LLC.

Q. How did you get started?

Dr. Amanda: In 2019, I began to recognize that there was something more that I was called to do to impact other people. I was a curriculum consultant with other mentors who are part of the Cohesion Network. We were working with children and teaching them leadership skills in urban school settings. I was able to read my book with them and also share it with families. It began my passion to impact at the community level. As I continued, I realized it was time to begin my business in 2019. Before I launched, I began to design my websites with mentors Chris and Jess Engler of Cybergrapes, Inc. They began teaching me how to set up and design my blogs and other practical tools. The name Healthy Roots is the initial branch of what I do. Healthy Roots are the healthy ways of thinking and believing that one must have to really know who they are and what they do. I became inspired with other successful entrepreneurs with trainings from people such as Pedro Adao, Les Brown, Pete Vargas, Mark Lack, Louise Taylor and so many more people I now know in this area.I am grateful for Kingdom entrepreneur communities as well as the M3Linked Forum Detroit that has been a place for me to learn, grow, and connect with other entrepreneurs, too.

Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?

Dr. Amanda: My biggest startup challenge was with myself. I had to overcome the poverty mindset and limiting beliefs about my money. In short, I had to heal and grow in loving myself and believing the money I was going to spend was to invest in myself, personally and professionally.

I also had to recognize that the value others carried was gold! I began to shift my mindset and invest first in my mentor Pedro Adao. Next, I made the leap to invest in my next book with the CEO of Square Tree Publishing Sherry Ward. Finally, I invested in myself with financial strategist Louise Taylor. I am grateful for the steps that it took me to say yes. By the end of 2021, I have seen a shift in my current coaching business and I anticipate it continuing to grow.

My passion is to see men and women evolve into who they are called to be and move ahead and change their families, community, city, region, and nations!

Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?

Dr. Amanda: The most memorable thing that I did since I began my business was host the First Annual Healthy Family Connections International Virtual Summit. This summit included over 23 speakers from the United States, Afghanistan, Botswana, and Tanzania. The purpose of the summit was to support families to communicate and connect with each other and bring together the fields of education, mental health, and leadership. The speakers included people in the areas of education, educational leadership, doctors, mental health advocates, counselors, professionals, parents, and disability advocates. So many families were impacted by this event that will also happen again in Summer 2022. People and families left the event feeling loved, healing their hearts, reconnecting with better communication tools, and learning how to connect in the community. Recordings of this event are available at www.amandahelman.com under products.

Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?

Dr. Amanda: One of my favorite books is The Body Keeps Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk. He shares very practical explanations of how the mind and body must connect for healing to occur and what happens when it does not. I have read and re-read this book in terms of my work with trauma. I always recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand more about the physiology of trauma.

Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?

Dr. Amanda: One of my favorite apps that I enjoy is Canva for my marketing and graphics as an easy tool for design. I also enjoy that it is easy to use across social media platforms.

I also use the Phonto app for my videos since it is an easy way to edit recordings and then share it on social media.

Finally, I also use ClaroPDF app as a helpful tool to turn html or web pages into PDFs that can be electronically read aloud and shared. This app is simple yet effective with organizing web pages I want to keep.

Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?

Dr. Amanda: My legacy is birthed from daily questions I ask myself: Did I learn how to love well today? Did I love myself well? Did I love others well? Did I receive love from myself and from others?

With that said, my legacy is simply to love and serve the person in front of me well every day and to remain in the moment with them. Each and every day.

Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?

Dr. Amanda: You are incredible and the gifts you have within you are needed for a time such as this-you are gold and what you carry matters so get going!
