Here we sit down with Shane, to know a bit more about his journey as a relationship coach.

Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

Shane: When diagnosed with ADHD at 36, the process through my healing was difficult, the resources that I needed, psychiatrist and therapists, were scarce. I went for a long time, even finding a doctor or therapist who even believed I had ADHD. Everywhere I looked, many just didn’t think that adults could have ADHD.

Once I finally found a doctor and therapist that dealt with adult ADHD and began my healing, I learned a valuable lesson:

There is no normal, nobody is normal. “Normal” is a social construct used to force people to fit a mold of conformity. This causes our society to cause untold trauma to people who are neuroatypical, even if well-meaning.
Another thing I learned was that psychiatry and therapy work on past trauma and present symptoms, not necessarily future goals.
For me, this was a gap that I wanted to fill. I could help people who are going through what I went through. Those who are working through their healing, and now are trying to find their passions, their goals, their purpose in life.
This lets me fulfill the purpose I discovered for myself. My purpose is to help people celebrate their differences, break free from unrealistic social expectations, and find out how to use their uniqueness to live happier life.

Q. How did you get started?

Shane: For a long time, I did Life Coaching as a side gig. As a stay-at-home parent of twins, dealing with them was a full-time job. That made things hard to workaround. Luckily, my wife, a special needs teacher, got a different schedule that allowed me to have the freedom to work in the afternoons.

I decided then to create the actual business and make a serious go at it. This started with me investing in myself by getting my Life Coach Certification. I developed the messages for the niche that I wanted to fill, and then I created a Business and Marketing Plan I could give to small-business groups in my area.
Working with them, we developed a plan to spread awareness of my business, create networking plans, and to build my brand.

Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?

Shane: My biggest startup challenge was working around my ADHD and my inexperience. I have a background in project management and Life Coaching, but not in small-business ownership.

To get around my ADHD it was using my project management experience to build a structured plan with a step-by-step checklist of what was needed. My EIN #, my business plan, my marketing plan, my niche, etc.
Working with my local small-business advisors in North Carolina I was able to learn and educate myself on how to develop a small business and the common pitfalls that people face in taking that plunge.

Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?

Shane: While helping a client of mine with some of his goals, one of them was to make sure that his father, who was ill, had access to support when his son was at work. Just a few days after making sure that his father’s Life Alert bracelet was functioning and tested, his father fell down and needed help. He was able to get the help he needed and first responders were able to get to him in time. This was a valuable lesson that our goals do not just affect ourselves, they affect those around us as well.

Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?

Shane: This is pretty hard for me to be honest. I spend most of my time on the internet, and well, having ADHD means that my interests vary widely from day to day.

But the book that sticks out the most to me, what started my journey into self-discovery of my need to be a leader was Stephen R. Covey’s Keys to Effective Leadership: The 7 Habits for Managers, Principle-Centered Leadership, 4 Imperatives of Great Leaders.

It is what drove me to be a better leader, and in doing so, helped me develop my entire structure of how I treat people, even in day-to-day life.

Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?

Evernote — This is by far my favorite tool to keep my life in order. It works with Google Calendar and has an entire suite of capabilities that let me keep my life in order.

PostPlanner.com — This social media posting platform helps me be creative and post on a constant basis, being able to have a dashboard for following all of the various social media feeds a quote generator, and conversation starters, all shareable from the feeds themselves, it is my one-stop-shop for social media.

Google Workplace — From Documents, Sheets, to the Calendar, it helps me keep all of my content in one place, no matter where I’m at.

Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?

Shane: I want to help people break free of the social constraints that are growing more and more irrelevant to our society. I want people to grow in their lives and allow for their creativity to flourish.

I want my kids to grow up knowing that I will always be there for them. That I will always provide an environment of love, trust, and structure. I will always be their biggest fans, no matter what they decide to do in their life.

Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?

Shane: Work with your local small-business groups to develop your business. It’s a little-known resource that, in most states or cities, provides an amazing return on investment.
