Here we sit down with Bethany, to know a bit more about her journey as a web designer.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Bethany: My passion for art and technology drove me to start my own business. I’ve dabbled in amateur art for years, and I managed technology. I finally decided to follow my two passions married into one.
Q. How did you get started?
Bethany: I thought I would go back to college for my doctorate, but I honestly couldn’t stand another year in formal schooling — plus the sacrifice of time and money that it comes with. I decided I would put that time, effort, and investment in my own business. It was the right decision because it’s been an investment into me and my passions.
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Bethany: The biggest challenge is starting a client base. In every field, there’s considerable competition. I knew that I needed a strong brand and for people to associate me with web design. The best thing I did was boldly set my title on Facebook as a web developer. I wasn’t spammy; I talked authentically about my passion on my Facebook profile and my business page.
Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?
Bethany: The most memorable item is setting up Bethany Web Design formally and legally as an entity. It was exciting to get my first client, but it was deeply gratifying to recognize my abilities enough to know it was time to claim my business to the state of North Carolina.
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Bethany: “They Ask, You Answer”. It encourages you to build your business through genuine responses about your industry; it has great principles and practical steps to get momentum going on your marketing.
Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?
- Dubsado is a CRM that manages leads, contracts, invoicing, and payments.
- GeekPack is the online community in which I learned web development. Julia and the Geekpack are an empowering online learning community.
- Google Workspace! I’m a Google Certified Trainer, and my processes are so much easier with Google tools.
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Bethany: I want each business or entrepreneur that I create websites for to have the same opportunity that a large corporation does in that realm.
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey
Bethany: Just get started; someone out there is doing this right now with less expertise and getting paid for it.
