Here we sit down with Gabriel, to know a bit more about his journey as a personal trainer.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Gabriel: I grew up with an entrepreneurial family. My mom opened her first restaurant when she was 21 years old. Since I was a child she has told me all the strategies and different systems she has used for her business. Therefore I grew up with that mindset, I had the opportunity to run her catering business when I was back in Venezuela, I was only 19 years old and I was overseeing over 25 employees (a big challenge for me) I learn a lot of things and once again I knew this was for me.
Q. How did you get started?
Gabriel: I started training when I was 14 years old and I realized that exercising is the best thing that has happened to me. I began to discover dynamic ways to exercise, that somehow helped me constantly show up, improving my strength, flexibility, and reaching a lean body. Then, I decided that I wanted to share this with more people.
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Gabriel: There were hundreds of them, but the most challenging I had was when I moved to the Uk. I had this fantastic Idea with the app, teaching this new type of training, and I didn’t know anyone, literally a few friends I used to go surfing. Therefore, word of mouth was not going to work for me. I had to apply the marketing skills I learned at uni. But I needed money to do that. I started advertising on social media, using different strategies; some worked, and some didn’t.
I spent all my savings and only a few clients; I still wasn’t ready to profitable this business. I had to jump back to the restaurant and do more hours overnight as a chef.
I tried it again, and I ended up spending everything ( even the money to pay the rent). I was very stressed, I couldn’t sleep for days, my training wasn’t efficient until one day I received a call from a fantastic couple that saw my ad on google, and they connected to me so much. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to work with them as they lived so far from where I live (1-hour drive). But I was not going to say “no” for anything as my mom taught me, so we met at their house, and they loved what I was doing, my type of training, my personality, and I also got along with them. They bought many sessions in advance, my programs and we had a fantastic time. After that, I started getting more clients
Nowadays, I’m still working with them, we have a fantastic connection, and I can say they gave me the best of luck in this business. Suddenly, people from their town started contacting me, even the gym where I currently do fitness classes.
I’ve learned that if you build a business that you’re passionate about it, no matter how many times you failed, eventually you’re going to make it.
Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?
Gabriel: Helping one guy lose 20kg in 3 months was a fantastic experience and a big chance for this person.
Moreover, I think every client that spends with me more than 4 months is memorable for me because they get great results and all that positivity is stored in my mind.
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Gabriel: All Seth Godin books, especially “this is marketing and “tribes”
Because marketing is everything, people buy a product from you when they connect with it. If they don’t connect they won’t buy it. No matter how pretty, delicious, or the quality of the product, you need to know your audience.
Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?
Gabriel: I don’t use any online app rather than mine for exercising
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Gabriel: To help others, no matter how much money I make in my life, there’s nothing more grateful than helping others.
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Gabriel: Like said earlier, find your passion, and create a business out of it.
If you create a business that you don’t like you will forsake it sooner or later, even if it is profitable.
