Here we sit down with Breyanna to learn a bit more about her journey as an entrepreneur!
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Breyanna: I was inspired to create, format, design, and publish my own books by the freedom and choice I could have in the process. Although I love writing with a passion, I can’t imagine not designing my own covers or having control of the formatting. I’ve learned so much.
How did you get started?
Breyanna: I started with my debut novel, Azure Light at twenty years old. I interviewed with author Holly Kelly, who walked me through her traditional publishing experience versus when she started publishing independently. I listened to the other authors out there who shared their experiences, and I took extensive notes. I published that first young adult fantasy novel in August of 2017, and I still remember the first time I held a physical proof copy of my book in my hands. I still feel that way every time I get one of my books in my hands for the first time.
What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Breyanna: My biggest startup challenge was being ignorant of the little things that make a huge difference. That’s a vague answer, but it applies to all the pieces I struggled with, from learning to format a book, getting it edited, designing the cover, and especially creating graphics and promotional materials for marketing.
What is the most memorable thing you’ve done since you started your business?
Breyanna: The most memorable thing I’ve done since I started this business would be either creating my writing blog or helping other authors I know bring their books from a rough manuscript to a final product ready for publication.
What is one book you recommend, and why?
Breyanna: Oh, there are so many! If I had to recommend one book to other authors working to grow their businesses, I would recommend My Book Launch Planner by Mandi Lynn. This book has so much helpful information packed into so few pages, and it made all the difference in my book launch planning and marketing.
What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools or resources and what do you love about them?
Breyanna: Instagram has been a huge resource in helping me market my books, and blog, and connecting me with some amazing authors out there!
Procreate is the resource I use for 90% of my digital design and illustration, and I’m crazy about this app!
Microsoft Excel would probably have to be my third favorite. I love spreadsheets. Love to plan. Love to track data. Excel does a great job of keeping me organized in all my projects.
In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Breyanna: I want the words I write to leave an impact on someone. I want those words to stick with someone after I’m gone. I also want to help other authors get their words out into the world.
In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Breyanna: Don’t be afraid to reach out: We’re all growing together.
